There are no worms in my garden!!!

We have a patio with flower beds around it and lots of pots with plants. DS is obsessed with worms and I am out there digging with him all the time trying to find some and seriously - there are none. I have been digging for 2 days. I must admit some of the plants look a bit sad as well. What the flipping heck fire is going on??? I want worms!!

If you improve the soil - add compost, composted bark etc - the worms will come. When we started work on our garden, it hadn't been cultivated for several years, the soil was poor and compacted and there were no worms. Now, several years and many sacks of composted bark later, we have loads of worms (and a resident robin who lives on them). It's a bit late in the year for adding bark or compost as a mulch (although this depends on how many plants you've got in the flowerbed, as it's all about not covering over the emerging plants) but you could add a good dollop in the planting hole every time you plant something.

We landscaped a garden a few years ago and had sterile soil put in so no worms. It sounds weird, but we actually bought some from a company called [http://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk/ Wiggley Wigglers]]. It must rank as the daftest purchase I have ever made and unwrapping them was NOT a treat.

Yes, I didn't suggest buying them because they're quite expensive and I was concentrating on luring them in for free, but mail order's a good deal quicker .....

Not sure I could face luring a worm...

I personally hate all creepy crawlies and worms and everything but this is what we do for the love of our children! The boy wants worms!

Maybe, but not many. Wiggly wigglers (or 'borrowing' from a neighbour's garden) are your best bet for a quick worm find!

I have some nice juicy worms I dug up doing the garden earlier. Does DS still want them or shall I let the go?
