Has anyone done this with grass seed

We are sowing a smallish patch of grass seed to extend the lawn. My helpful (?) brother in law says a good tip is to lightly sprinkle soil on top of the seed, once you have sown the seed, to keep the birds off ... is this a good tip thanks

yes top tip, tho you should also make sure soil you are sprinkling seed onto is raked over.

I also put nets over the newly sown patch if it is small enough to protect from the birds.

You have to remember to take net off before grass gets too long though or it gets tangled up in it!

Thanks all. Do you think it might be a bit late in the year to do this though?

no I do it throughout the summer my lawn has some little holes in

I did it last Bank Holiday Monday and the new grass has come through beautifully. I sprinkled compost over the top of mine and put some CDs and plastic bags on strings over the top to keep the birds away. I've also reseeded patches on the lawn much later in the year than this.
