We have gone from no aphids to hordes of the blighters in the space of 48 hours.

So if you have roses, Japanese maples or other stuff they like the look of... be warned! Don't just look at the shoots, look on the underside of leaves too.

Are you in the north? We’re plagued with them too-they’re everywhere!

I have tons on the auquilegia and roses. Blast them with the hose!

In the midlands and I’ve just been for a walk and there’s loads floating around in the air. I don’t get it - I’ve never seen so many about before. Is it the weather?

dogcatkitten · 17/05/2025 21:19

Not so many this year so far, south east. Last year was a plague.

Butterbeanbutterbo · 17/05/2025 21:19

my theory is that the warm weather has allowed them to multiply loads before significant numbers of predators are around? And no rain either which stops them a bit??

When this happens, there's usually an explosion of ladybirds after a while. They love an aphid, ditto lacewings. You should be able to get them from the bio pest control suppliers.

Same here! Was in Moray last week, and loads of leaves had that shiny sticky aphid poop, not yet covered in mould.

Roses are absolutely covered, just teeming.

On the plus side, the blue tits have extremely busy on the roses, and they are delightful little birds to have in the garden.

Aren't they born pregnant and the bulk of them are female, reproduce by parthenogenesis. They'll be a lag until their predators catch up and then we'll be hip deep in ladybirds.
