Which DA rose as a gift?

Folks recently moved and I’d love to buy them a DA shrub rose for their new garden.

Waaaay to much choice when i look on the website! And im a bit clueless! Are there any stand-out ones you would recommend? I’m not sure if they’d keep it in a container or plant it.

Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

Boscobel is my all time favourite!! It’s the most gorgeous colour! Hard to go wrong with any of them really. Prob go for a shrub rather than a climber . What a nice gift!

Do they have a colour preference in their garden?

Is it a big or small garden?

Which way does the garden face?

Or choose one with a meaningful name.

Stickytreacle · 30/04/2025 07:47

I think in their shoes I'd prefer a voucher so they can choose their own.
Roses come in so many variations of form, scent and colour it can be very individualised, some roses can get quite large, so if their garden isn't very big it's worth considering too.
If you had to pick a potted rose I'd go for something smaller if not a big garden with good disease resistence such as Desdemona or Princess Anne.

I have Gertrude Jekyll and have bought two as gifts because they’re a beautiful colour and smell divine!

OnArainyNight · 30/04/2025 17:21

I was about to suggest Gertrude Jekyll, also.

chipshopElvis · 30/04/2025 18:04

I'll third Gertrude Jekyll it smells divine and can go in a pot or a border, but a voucher would also be a lovely gift.

BunsenBurnerBaby · 30/04/2025 18:05

Fourth for Gertrude.

GooseAttack · 30/04/2025 18:07

Friends bought me one of their bee-friendly boxes that comes with a rose voucher. It arrived beautifully presented and with things I’d actually use, and I chose my own rose (to add to the several DA I’ve already got!). I’d recommend that because all their roses are so lovely and if you don’t know exactly where they’d put it, and their garden is new to them, it would be almost impossible to choose!

Fr33asaB1rd · 30/04/2025 18:15

Gertrude Jekyll is literally the thorniest rose out there and prone to black spot.

Fr33asaB1rd · 30/04/2025 18:16

Depends if they want a shrub or climber and the colours they like.

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 30/04/2025 18:16

I find Princess Anne is excellent and more disease resistant than many other roses from David Austin.
It is a very healthy, vigorous and striking rose. Much like the woman it is named for.

Fr33asaB1rd · 30/04/2025 18:19

Olivia rose shrub can be put in a pot or the ground if they wanted, smells and looks gorgeous and is so easy to care for. Seems to be v black spot resistant too. If a climber Generous Gardener is amazing and Mary Delaney is lovely but more compact.

Update; Gertrude has been ordered!

Thank you once again (although slightly nervous about @Fr33asaB1rd‘s comment! 😬)

The Poet's Wife, it's a lovely creamy yellow rose with the most beautiful lemony scent. I have one in a big pot and I love it.

Oops just seen you've ordered one. Never mind 😊

BeaLola · 04/05/2025 18:13

I was about to post then saw you have ordered one

Just in case it's well received and they love it you could wait til RHS Chelsea in a couple of weeks and see what the new rose DA are launching for 2025 as could make a nice memento of the year they moved in ?

maldivemoment · 09/05/2025 21:41

Further update. Rose arrived. Hastily put it into room we’re extending (rest of house has under floor heating so thought it best to keep it somewhere cool)

Forgot the room I put it in was being plastered this week! You should see the state of the box! Looks like something I’ve found in a skip! 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
