What's this? Please tell me it's not knotweed.

It doesn’t look like it, but I’m a little unsure. Can you add more photos?

Jen579 · 29/04/2025 18:08

Have you googled Japanese knotweed shoots? I don't think any of the picture look like yours. I've no idea what it is but i don't think it's that.

AlwaysGardening · 29/04/2025 18:08

Definitely not Japanese knotweed

MaryGreenhill · 29/04/2025 18:12

It's 'Red Baron' a Japanese grass according to Google lens OP.

CaspersMum24 · 29/04/2025 18:23

My plant id app says it's a Long-lipped serapias. It's a herb apparently.

Namechangeforthis88 · 29/04/2025 18:31

Thank goodness. Sorry had to shoot out to collect a child from something. I did look it up. I still wasn't sure if it was wishful thinking on my part that it was a passing resemblance and no more. It's just so randomly poking up through lawn. Okay, thank you everyone. I knew the gardening board would come to my rescue.

No it isn’t! Long lipped Serapias is an orchid native to Mediterranean countries and not found in the British Isles. Which just shows ou can’t rely on plant apps. (I have actually seen it in Majorca, Cyprus and Crete)

And edited to say it isn’t JK either.

Well that's me told, and on the day I've just paid out £29.99 for the app subscription too! Seriously though the app is normally very accurate.

I'm very intrigued as to what this plant is; as others have said, it's definitely not knotweed so it would appear to be harmless. If you find out OP, please let us know.

Init4thecatz · 30/04/2025 15:08

So... 'NOTweed' :)

mondaytosunday · 30/04/2025 21:39

Japanese knotweed isn’t as bad as it’s reputed to be. Buddleia can do more damage. But anyway it’s not JK.

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 30/04/2025 22:02

@mondaytosunday Japanese knotweed is just as bad as it is reputed to be. A friend of mine had it come up through the middle of her solid concrete living room floor. Fortunately for her it was a rented house and they were only there a short time.

The foundations must have been seriously dodgy.

No, it was a relatively modern house, and there was knotweed everywhere in the garden, in the properties both sides and behind as well, leading onto a riverbank. All it takes apparently is the smallest tiny hairline crack and it's through.

My friends only needed a short-term rental otherwise they wouldn't have touched it with a bargepole.

This is what my plant identifier says (might have to wait for picture to load)

This was already mentioned upthread, and I replied that it wasn’t, as Long lipped Serapias is an orchid native to Mediterranean countries and not found in the British Isles - I have seen it growing in Majorca, Cyprus and Crete.
