What to plant around roses

I splurged on 6 David Austin roses on the final day of their bare root sale. Now I need to find companion plants but after the splurge, my budget is more The Range than the local garden centre. I haven’t visited yet but in anticipation of a limited selection, what plants are good companions for roses? I know salvias are good and I’d like to get some alliums later this year but if I can’t find salvias, what else should I look out for?

Geraniums are good for this, the perennial ones not the hanging basket ones..

There’s some suggestion that plants that have a strong smell are good companion plants to roses to deter aphids, hence salvia’s & alliums.
Also nepeta (cat mint), lavender, rosemary, thyme, marjoram & oregano.
