What should I plant in this space?

The grass in this area is being removed and I’ll be left with a complete blank canvas. I am not a gardener so have no idea where to start. Any ideas?

What should I plant in this space?

Is it north, south, east or west facing?

Why is the grass being removed? Will there still be soil there or do you mean it's being paved?

It looks like you may be near a road so perhaps some kind of hedging along the wall that will grow up a little? I think choisya ternata is pretty (the green/white variety)

It’s South facing I think. The grass is being removed as it’s about 50% weeds and I have tried everything over the years to get rid of them. It will all be soil I think although I’m open to ideas.

Start by adding a lot of organic matter eg manure, compost etc. You can just lay i5 on the surface and let the worms do the work. What is the soil like?

Roses. Mulch with wood chips and underplant with geranium Rozanne.

Is that a front garden? I’d put a small tree at the far end, cherry or crab apple. Then a choisya hedge as suggested above.

how about paving and a nice bench looking at the house so you can sit and enjoy the space? And gravel with rosemary and daisies between the paving.

I would go for ornamental grasses. Check out PIET OUDOLF for brilliant ideas.

I wouldn’t want to do much gardening in a front garden. So I would plant a mix of japanese anemones (Honorine Jobert) and ornamental grasses with scabiosa and nepeta for a pop of colour.

I like the idea of an ornamental tree in the corner for height. Something that doesn’t get to big and has an early flush of flowers like Exochordia the bride.
