What is this? Growing in/through our hedge.

Hi folks

Can anyone tell me what this is? Perhaps more importantly, do I let it do its thing? Or do I try to remove it?

Yet again, I’m clueless.
Thank you

Looks like Sycamore

From those weird little spinny winged seeds that get everywhere

Horticula · 25/04/2025 20:52

Sycamore seedling. If you don't want it to become part of your hedge dig it out.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 25/04/2025 20:53

Definitely a sycamore sapling. They are a nightmare and spread wildly (it will have been 'planted' via bird poo) Dig it out, unless you have the space for a large and rather fast growing tree.

violetqueen6 · 25/04/2025 20:56

Dig it out. Avoid the temptation to chop it down as it will just develop lots of stems and carry on growing.

violetqueen6 · 25/04/2025 21:02

Google images of sycamore seedlings so that you can pull them out ( easy) even when they are young.
If you've got one , there will be more and you really don't want them growing.

MotherOfCatBoy · 25/04/2025 21:11

If you are minded to save it, you can dig it out and replant somewhere else, or in a pot to pass on to someone / local group? Some local green group might be looking for saplings. Mind the roots if you can…

The seeds have wings (like other maples) and distribute themselves by the power of wind, they don't need to be eaten by birds first.

You can chop it right back @maldivemoment but they are right brutes and will grow faster than the rest of the hedge, so it might be better to remove it.

Sycamore, get rid of it dig it out or kill it gross huge it’s a nightmare and it sees everywhere

Wait…all those little weeds/saplings at the bottom. They’re not sycamore too, are they? 😭

Nope. But even if they were, the young tiny ones are super easy to pull. They look more like dandelion (which have a long tap root.)

@Mmmkaay thank you.
