I've just seen a peacock butterfly in our garden, has anybody else spotted any butterflies this season yet?

Seven species so far - peacock, red admiral, brimstone, speckled wood, comma, green-veined white and orange tip. Not just one or two either.

I'm volunteering with the local wildlife trust and did my first butterfly survey at one of the reserves today. 38 butterflies of 5 species.
Only seen brimstone, peacock and small tortoiseshell in my garden so far.

I've only seen two so far this year, one was white and organe one black and orange ( I have no idea what species they are), and my dog tried to eat both of them. Luckily I managed to call her off, and the lovely butterflies lived to see another day!

One flew past my car when I was in a queue yesterday, but not close enough to see what it was, other than that it was brown.

@countrygirl99 I'm a member of a wildlife trust as well, it's great that you volunteer with them.

We went for a couple of walks last weekend and saw loads of peacocks, couple of orange tips, a comma, a number of brimstones and a couple of others (I'm not very good at id-ing them yet!)
In the garden just a couple of peacocks, brimstones and a few whites (again, haven't got my eye in yet!).
I've just bought this Id guide which is nice and visual and has DD enthused about butterflies too: https://www.field-studies-council.org/shop/publications/butterflies-guide/
My work takes part in the big butterfly count every year and, as I organise it, I thought I should get some practice in before I'm embarrassed again!

I can add large white and holly blue to that list🙂I think the cold nights are keeping numbers low here, however.

Hoping for holly blue this weekend.

Yamadori · 11/04/2025 19:01

It seems like they are all on the move then, so I will have to keep my eyes peeled.

Haven't seen all that many more over the last few days, on a walk I saw a holly blue and a cabbage white, and there's been a small white in our garden today.

In other news - we heard a cuckoo this morning. Smile

We've had lots this year, numbers seem much higher than previous years. We also have loads of hoverflies.
