Starlings

Maybe not right place? Some starlings nest in the roof of the garage next door every year. I have seen the adults fly in over last week or so building nest. However recently have only seen one adult, presumably the female, constantly looking around. I assume she’s sat in the nest waiting for her mate. I can’t see another bird going in now though 😞. Has she been abandoned? Makes me disproportionately sad.

Oh the poor love. I don't know whether they mate for life or not. Maybe buy some mealworms to put out in your garden to help with feeding the brood.

Starlings are great for gardens as they eat leatherjackets, and their numbers have been dwindling in recent years due to so many people using gravel or chippings instead, or paving their front garden over for parking.

I will but there are also a lot of cats around here so worry about that.

Update. Been in garden most of day and only seen the one bird popping in and out of the nest space to scan the horizon. No other bird coming in and out. 😞 Pretty sure last year there was a lot of activity. Think the male is gone.

Hope she finds another mate soon.
