Bare Roots in Pots

Poppy61 · 05/04/2025 09:44

Recently potted up variety of bare root plants: nepeta, salvias, encipops, hardy geraniums and others. Been putting them out during the day and back in greenhouse at night, as temperatures are so low. Decided to leave geraniums outside constantly now, but I'm not sure what to do with the other plants. Won't be putting in the ground until May. Read somewhere that they shouldn't be kept in the greenhouse, but they look so tiny and vulnerable. Plus there is the danger of slugs and snails 😬 Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you

All my perennials out hardening off. If it looks like it’s going to be super cold I might put them in for the night, but it would have to be very cold.

The wind is so cold that I've put them in greenhouse again for tonight. You've both made me a bit braver with them now, thank you!

Yes I’ve put them in a fairly sheltered spot but they are staying out all night

I’ve got some on order now, they’ll be potted up and left in a sheltered spot in the garden until they’ve put on some growth and then they’ll go on the garden.

Can I ask where you got them? I thought I’d left it too late.

@lostinthesunshine In the Farmer Gracy sale.

Mine are all in the greenhouse having been potted up last week. I won’t harden them off until they’ve put on top growth and look well established.

Poppy61 · 06/04/2025 16:47

Mine aren't well established yet, hence part of my concern. Usually instinct kicks in, but not in this instance! Bought mine from Farmer Gracey....before the sale. Very impressed with how they were packaged. Thank you all.
