My DD got me two beautiful Ranunculus plants and a hebe (Marilyn Monroe) today for Mother’s Day. My garden is rather bare because I’m rubbish at gardening but they’re so beautiful and I’m chuffed with the gift.

do you have any advice for me to make them last and last please? tia

To be more specific, should I leave them in pots and bring the ranunculus indoors at some point? But I probably need to buy bigger pots than the ones they came in? And do I need some special soil and should I feed them? Shade or full sun? from looking online most of the advice is about growing from seed or is US specific

Where did they come from? If they were grown in a poly tunnel or greenhouse then I would gradually acclimatise them to outdoors by putting them out in the day and bringing in overnight for a bit. The hebe can be planted out once acclimatised and should do well. Ranunculus have been trickier for me - less hardy and need really good drainage, so would keep them in pots and make sure you protect them from slugs/snails. I would only repot if roots looking crowded. Theoretically they are perennials but are known for being pretty unreliable, so many people treat them like annuals.

I have lots of hebes - mine are planted out in the flower beds. They seem pretty indestructible and do well in both the sunny and shadier borders. Mine have grown really big from a tiny start so make sure give them plenty of room. Sure they’ll be happy in your garden.

I have planted ranunculus from bulbs but they never took. So i’d be inclined to keep those in a pot!
