Squirrels ate my bulbs! Sad empty pots

What should I do? Squirrels ate all my lovely Sarah Raven tulip bulbs. What can I put in my empty pots? They are depressing. Can I get bulbs in the green? Will they still eat them? Or narcissi ?

Please help a sad empty potted person 🙏

Garden centres are selling potted tulips around me! I’ve grabbed some to replace eaten bulbs. They’re growing nicely now 😊

Good idea! Thanks. Have the squirrels kept away?

Next year try scattering chilli powder on the soil after planting, although I have to admit I prefer good, old-fashioned chicken wire.

I did, it made no difference unfortunately

Squirrels can be such bastards.

Chicken wire covers when planting till the leaves come up is the only surefire solution.
Right pain to make but you've only got to make them once then you've got them forever.

The squirrels near me are only interested in bulbs, once they’ve started sprouting up they leave them alone! They’ve ignored all of my ones that have shoots up 😊

The squirrels have eaten all my tulips even the ones in flower 🙁. They eat the bulbs and leave the flowers and stalks for me to bin
can I do anything to deter them next time?

From up thread sounds like chicken wire is the best way

Grate up a bar of soap and sprinkle it on your pots after you’ve planted bulbs. They hate the scent

Squirrels are wankers. I put a patch of netting over mine then more soil. Or I forget and just call bulbs squirrel food.

Top your pots with thorny rose cuttings.

Old metal hanging basket frames make great pot covers and the holes are big enough for tulips to grow through and stay supported. The older and rustier the better!

Crankyaboutfood · 30/03/2025 00:27

feed them something else? everything has to live

Weirdly ours left my tulips but ate all the anemone blanda corns I under planted them with, Looks ridiculous as now the tulips are in far too big a pot on their own.
