I have lots of these in my new garden. Many are growing near fences and walls. Thought they might be bluebells but they just continue to a clump of leaves.

Any thoughts?

Maybe some kind of Lily, I used to have some in my front border and this is how they start in Spring, they take a while to get to flowering point, depending on the weather June/July . I had some pink and some yellow then one year they didn't come up at all 🤷

candycane222 · 22/03/2025 10:50

They could well be bluebells imo. Where I am the leaves are up like this, but flowers are several weeks away - so not yet visible

NotHavingAFunTime · 22/03/2025 10:51

My bluebells are just leaves atm

Onlyvisiting · 22/03/2025 10:51

I've a plant app on my phone (highly recommend!) And the most likely answer ir gave is Agapanthus. Aka lily of the nile apparently.
It's not 100% but usually gets in the right ball park at least and the pics look likely if you google.

Onlyvisiting · 22/03/2025 10:54

But also yes, it is too early for bluebell flowers so could still be them! Although I wouldn't really expect to see them planted against walls like you mention. More under trees.

chattyness · 22/03/2025 10:56

Tried to add pics to my earlier post and couldn't, hope you can see these , they definitely start like your photo in your OP I had orange lilies at another house i a pot, Asiatic I think they were called

Google lens says its

Agapanthus 'Blue Magic', African lily 'Blue Magic'
A clump-forming perennial with deciduous, slightly arching, broadly strap-shaped foliage. Sturdy stems to 80cm tall bear rounded umbels of dark blue, trumpet-shaped flowers in summer

Pixiedust1234 · 22/03/2025 11:31

My bluebells show leaf from daffodil season (now) but don't actually flower until very late April/early May. I think they are bluebells too.

Bluebells - probably Spanish

Tealfish · 22/03/2025 11:57

Spanish bluebells, they appear like this all over our garden, cracks and all. Quite invasive, some flower and some don’t. I try and keep on top of them so they don’t spread too much

WhatMe123 · 22/03/2025 12:17

Bluebells spreads massively so be warned 😬

Solveago · 22/03/2025 18:00

Thanks for your suggestions as to possibilities. Will post again when (if) flowers emerge.

They’re bluebells. If they’re near walls they’re probably spreading from neighbouring gardens. Now is a good time to pull them out.

Solveago · 22/03/2025 20:14

Why are bluebells are problem? Assuming I like bluebells which I do.

But do you only like bluebells, to the exclusion of anything else 🙃

They are very invasive, they will take over your garden and not allow anything else to grow.

Bluebells belong in woodlands, they are very badly behaved in a home garden setting.

Spanish bluebells are an invasive non-native garden escapee, and they interbreed with our native bluebells affecting their gene pool, and can out compete it.

I agree your images are of Spanish Bluebell, they are very very hard to get rid of if you wanted to pull them out

Agreed! Spanish bluebells for sure.
