Euonymous for autumn colour?

I have a small (3m wide, 1m high) shallow bank above a path that is a total pain to mow. I am thinking of taking up the grass and planting a low bush that will suppress the weeds and provide interest in autumn. Would a compact euonymous work?

I love euonymus and they come in so many varieties. It is perfect for the bed.

Thank you @Rictasmorticia - do you have any varieties you recommend?

Fortunei emerald and gold is my particular favourite. You can plant one variety or mix up different ones. It is personal taste really. They are such an easy plant to maintain

Not all of them have much autumn colour. I have planted loads and they have all been a bit disappointing. I would wait till autumn and buy one when it's in it's autumn colour so you know what you are getting

Euonymus alatus is the one for Autumn colour. As long as it is in sun you'll get bright red foliage. The cultivar 'Compactum' is smaller than the species. Euonymus europeaus also colours quite well and has wonderful orange and pink fruit. Usually grown as a large shrub or small tree.

Thank you @AlwaysGardening - that's what I want! Having a look at buying them I gather that they are v slow growing so going for the cheapest (9cm pot) is probably foolish - as the grass will out compete it in a fortnight! I will shop arond and see what I can find - and hope it delivers!

Yes pretty slow growing. I definitely wouldn’t buy one in a 9cm pot

B&q and Homebase have them at the moment in various sizes
