Has anyone got tadpoles this year yet? I have lots frogs but this year no spawn yet. Cant work out why.

I don't know much about them. Maybe it's still too cold at night? Are frogs affected by that? It's minus one degree here tonight, below freezing. Maybe the frost would kill the spawn. Or the frogs. I seem to remember them mating for days at a time when I was a child and it seemed quite difficult for them to move around like that. Maybe they'd die of hypothermia if they had to stay in the water that long in these temperatures.

I've got frogspawn, it is quite early in the season though. I think a lot of it will die due to freezing temperatures.

Make sure there are lots of places for frogs to hide and shelter in the garden.

My very large pond is still freezing over at night. It’s too early for most areas. If you see it you are supposed to report it to enable them to track climate impact on British wildlife

menopausalmare · 05/03/2025 06:56

It's too early. My pond is frozen over each morning. The frogs are coupling up but are still quite elusive at the moment. I expect some in the next couple of weeks.

BellissimoGecko · 05/03/2025 07:28

Some years we have spawn by now, but not this year. It's too cold. Our pond is freezing!

It needs to be over 8 degrees just after dark for frogs and toads to start the journey back to their pond to breed, and it's been far too cold this past week.

We need some warm, wet weather and then they will start!

hotfirelog · 05/03/2025 20:58

I've seen several sets coupled / mating but no spawn yet. Really hoping it's not all been killed off by temperature. It was frosty here last week. Thanks for sharing experience and I guess I'll just have to hope

We got loads early March last year as I remember thinking it seemed early. Maybe it was warmer

Ive had a small batch/glut/cluster/wobble of frog spawn appear since the weekend but worried it will get killed by the frost. Have put a small plank of wood over the pond (its only a tiny pond), not touching the surface and with big gaps either side. Not sure if it will help, time will tell!

Talapia · 11/03/2025 22:16

We've got several clumps on our long established fish pond but none in our wildlife pond yet

smashedhen · 11/03/2025 22:24

I'm on the south coast and we had spawn on 20th feb. I moved it into a tub so the fish didn't eat it, and now have a tub full of tadpoles. They will go back into the pond next week

Ginflinger · 11/03/2025 22:27

Frogs here seem particularly up for it this year and loads of spawn already. Also worrying it's too soon and too cold.

TheMorels · 11/03/2025 22:30

None in ours, and it’s right beneath our (always open) bedroom windows, so I always hear them mating.

Purplepepsi · 11/03/2025 22:52

Loads in ours and tadpoles too.

We get frogs making their way to the ponds this time of year and a couple of weeks ago saw them doing the amplexus thing, on their way to the ponds. Then the weekend just passed there were more.

hotfirelog · 12/03/2025 23:22

I've now had two weekends two weeks apart seeing mating frogs. No spawn yet. Loads previous years so waiting again. A friend about 2 miles away has loads now in large pond

No spawn in ours either despite seeing loads frisky frogs. Sad as loads last year. Neighbour has some but not as much as usual

BellissimoGecko · 22/03/2025 15:03

Our frog spawned yesterday and today! Pond is still full of happy frogs.

menopausalmare · 22/03/2025 17:47

It's frogtastic in our pond. Several clumps of spawn and I counted 19 frogs and 1 newt in our pond today. So much croaking, it was lovely.
