what top soil for growing grass on top please

We have no idea about gardening. We want to extend the lawn with grass seed but want to get the right top soil first. What spec should we look for? Any specifications or national companies you can recommend or local ones if in central Essex. Thank you

generally companies that bulk sell topsoil will give it different grades so typically you will find premium pitch sports grade, vegetable growing grade, garden border grade, lawn/turf grade. These go from no stones down to a reasonable number of stones (which they sell as being good for drainage..).

lawn grass seed will pretty much grow in anything IME

As PP said. Search for your local companies and they will all sell different grades of soil.

make sure your area is cleared of weeds and grass (pulled out by roots). Make sure it’s level before adding topsoil.

Focus more on the type of seed you plan to sow. I’m about to do the same project, but haven’t chosen yet. I’m going to be conscious of where it’s being sowed (sunlight, drainage etc) vs how fast/thick it grows with regards to ongoing maintenance.

what is currently where you want the lawn to go?

Make sure the soil is treated to avoid weeds, learned from experience.
