Probably a really stupid question but how long does potting compost keep...

before it is no better than digging up some soil from the garden and using that in your pots.

I bought some bags of compost 3 years ago and still have one left. It was impregnated with fertiliser/plant food at the time but I am wondering if that benefit would have been lost and whether the nutrients would have seeped out somehow.

Is it still going to be as good as it ever was or should I get some more for my pots this year bearing in mind I am very bad at feeding and watering and my plants need all the help they can get!
