Which hellebores should I buy?

I planted some but they haven't thrived and a friend has just said its because of the variety (niger). Any suggestions for hardy varieties that will do ok in a woodland garden?

Helleborus x hybridus or H. orientalis do well in shade for me. The native H. foetidus is also good for shade. H. niger does better in a sunny spot.

Most of the hellebores on sale will by x hybridus or orientalis.

I think they look well but difficult at times to flourish.

Thank you that's helpful. I will have a lot for some more (although they seem to be very expensive at the moment!) How do they do from seed? I could do with a lot

Do others around you have them? Ie do they flourish in local conditions.

My exH planted 5 about 20 years ago and they just multiply here, both I'm shade and full sun - those 5 have spread around both my front and back gardens and I have given countless seedlings to others.

Have a look around and see whether they are growing well in local gardens - and you might find someone who would happily donate to you.
