Alternatives to grass........

My garden currently has a large path covered with slate chippings - not very child friendly! I am thinking of replacing it with artificial grass. Does anyone know if it's any good? Recommendations of where to buy from? Is it hideously expensive?

Why artificial grass?

why aren't slate chippings child friendly? are you worried about them eating them? or falling on them?

I am thinking of doing it in my garden. Its available from £9.99 a square metre, and a few companies online do it. Fitting is expensive, but they say you can DIY.

There seems to be a current trend for artificial grass. I would check how this affects your garden's drainage. Personally I love the real thing and think its much nicer for kids to play on.

dd not very stable and every time she falls over it leaves a big hole in her knee - only been walking a couple of months even though she is nearly two!
the garden is quite shady. Have had real grass before but just ends up really patchy where it doesn't grow. Not a big fan of wood chip tbh - always looks a bit messy!

Thyme lawn! Or camomile.

I'd leave it MillieRocks (if you like it that is). she'll be stable before you know it and so long as it's not actively dangerous (a great big deep pond or something) I reckon it's good for kids to just learn to negotiate those kind of hazards in the garden.

Slate chippings are no good for sitting on though, or pushing a toy buggy. I agree its not a practical flooring for a child.

the path runs right through the garden and you're so right maidamess - the new dolls buggy gets stuck every time! Might have to re-think the plans to buy her a trike for her birthday.....

I have artificial lawn laid last year and it's brilliant. It's only an area of about 12 sq metre. I used this company and had someone else fit it while they were doing my whole garden www.asgoodasgrass.co.uk
