cat shit and gravel

If I put gravel or shingle on my flower beds between the plants will the neighberhood cats still use the beds as a public convenience? At the moment they are crapping onto the soil. I thought of bark chippings but just read on anther thread that it stinks and cats like it. So shingle or stones or what? (or a cat gun)

And is it a good look??

Don't know, but we're thinking of having gravel as well, so interested in what people have to say. I think if you have the fine gravel it might be more litterish.
