Tomato question

I have 3 varieties this year:
Principe Borghese...I know what to do with them.
Tumbler...I think I just leave them to do what they want. They are in a hanging basket.
and
Red Pear...now these, I have no idea. Does anyone know if they are a cordon variety and I need to do all the pricking out like for the Principe?

I am now worried that I need to prick out my Tumbler Tom too.

I think that red pear is indeterminate, so it will be best grown as a cordon (ie one stalk with side shoots nipped off as you go).

Pricking out is when you move seedlings on to individual pots or modules - it's not really to do with taking out the sideshoots.

Tumblers just let them go - like all tomatoes don't let them get dried out, they will be very vulnerable in a hanging basket and need to be watered irritatingly often. a

Thank you. I have 'nipped out' (wrong use of vocab there when I said 'pricking out') the shoots already for my red pear. I have left the sideshoots for my tumblers, so I will just watch and learn. They are still very upright. Is it the vines that 'tumble'? How do they manage to support the weight?

oh I have a tomato question.
the book says something about nipping ot after the fourth truss.
nipping out i've worked out but what is a truss?
and while teracotta pots will look nicer would grobags be better?

and - I have 36 gourd plants. what should i do with them?

truss is the one with the vine on that the tomatoes hang from...I think

i also have 25 pumpkins.

i sort of thought they wouldn't all grow and they have.

If you use terracotta pots I would line them with a platic bag or plant ina plastic container and the put that inside the terracotta pot. Terracotta is very breatheable and lining them means they are less prone to drying out during the day - remember to leave holes for drainage if you line with polythene though!
