Forgot to put this on Xmas list and will probably have to get it for myself now.

The Niwaki seems popular but there are others like the Nisaku which have features that I like the sound of inc serrated edge and depth markings.

I have bought the Niwaki for DH for Christmas so cannot really say yet how useful it will be, but actually looking there at the Nisaku, I think that that one may have been the more useful option. More for the serrated edge than the depth marks which tbh I think will be obscured by soik in use anyway

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2024 09:42

I've got the Nikasu, the serrated edge is excellent when using it as a trowel amidst roots.

shellyleppard · 20/12/2024 09:43

Oooh that's posh!!! 💖

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2024 10:02

The sheath is good too, I'm wearing a belt with my gardening trousers now with the hori hori one side and secateurs on the other - that's all the tools I need most of the time.

Maggiethecat · 20/12/2024 10:24

@ErrolTheDragon - gardening trousers, belt, tools on hip - I want to be you when I grow up 😂

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2024 10:52

I have to have gardening trousers I change in and out of in the utility room because I'm incapable of doing more than light deadheading without being a mud magnet.Grin

FizzingAda · 20/12/2024 13:51

I've got one with a serrated edge, I use it all the time. Best tool I ever got

cortex10 · 20/12/2024 14:31

The Japanese mattock tools are also excellent for cutting through tough roots

SpecduckularlyQuackers · 22/12/2024 15:05

Mine is from Japeto and I much prefer it to the Niwaki ones.

Maggiethecat · 22/12/2024 18:07

I like the look of that Japeto one, and it has a sturdy holder

I’ve now had the chance to handle the Niwaki and the Japeto and the Niwaki is lighter in the hand and feels so much more balanced to me.
The downside of the Niwaki is that it lacks the serrated edge which I think would be so useful but I’m leaning toward it.

Japeto has revolutionised my elderly mum’s gardening as it’s so easy to use and well made. She has little strength in her hands and can use the hori hori for all sorts. So I got one too, it’s excellent quality.

BlueSkyBeing · 12/01/2025 00:11

Love the measurement marks on mine ...come in really handy, particularly checking planting depths.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/01/2025 10:15

I'm not quite sure what the point of a non-serrated hori hori would be vs any other decent narrow trowel.

Maggiethecat · 12/01/2025 10:48

I thought the bladed sides would allow you to cut through weeds/roots if sharp enough?

OP posts:
AlwaysFreezing · 12/01/2025 10:59

We're niwaki all the way here. You're right about the balance. And the edges are sharp enough that the serrated edge feels unnecessary.

Purplepixie19 · 14/12/2025 19:30

Niwaki do a serrated edge Hori Hori as well. I have the regular Hori Hori from Niwaki and absolutely love it. I use it all the utime for weeding, bulb planting, potting up and all kinds of other things. It comes with a canvas holster and you can buy things to keep it clean and sharp. I love mine and would definitely recommend it.
