Removing ivy from a Victorian building

Ivy has grown up the corner of our Victorian house and is spreading around the side, up to first floor height.

What's the best tactic for us to use remove it and do least damage to the brickwork?

Cut through the stem as low down as you can and pull the sections apart so they are no longer touching. Leave it and it will dry up and die off and you can then pull it off the house.

As above, but you'll also have to apply stump killer to the cut surfaces of the trunk/stem to kill it, otherwise it will just reshoot again.
