Can you deter bees & wasps from the garden?

I know we should be hugging a bumblebee, but DD is borderline phobic about them and refuses to go outside. I read maybe Wormwood??

are they attracted to a certain plant?

BrummieOnTheRun · 26/04/2008 11:43

I can't see them making a beeline for any particular plant, Southeastastra...there aren't many flowers there at the moment, but we didn't plant the garden so I have no idea what's going to appear over the coming months.

Next door have a garden packed with beautiful flowers but it's a nightmare for us.

No garden help but if your DD is afraid of wasps avoid theme parks like Alton Towers in the summer.

The queues can be very long and there are open bins dotted along that have wasps buzzing in and out of them. I'm not afraid of wasps but it freaks me out having to stand right next to them.

other alternative is cover her in insect repelant and convince her that cos she has that on they won't touch her. might be enough to boost her confidence with them.

BrummieOnTheRun · 26/04/2008 12:02

good suggestion, martini. and do insect repellents actually deter wasps?

good point, gfm.

not too sure but it migt be enough to convince your dd.

no but you can get those jars with holes in the bottom and put jam and water in them to catch and kill the fuckers

BrummieOnTheRun · 26/04/2008 12:16

ahhhh, I could just stick loads of jars around the garden... (goes off to raid glass recycling bin)

Those jar things work for wasps, not bees, which can fly out of them. Try not to kill bees if you can because they are so important for the enviornment and are already facing all kinds of threats. Murder as many wasps as you can, evil little buggers.

Lakeland do a good wasp trap and wasp attractant. Really works, but doesn't attract bees.

tissy · 26/04/2008 12:29

I heard aboutthis on Chris Evans' show last night- I'm planning to get one!

BrummieOnTheRun · 26/04/2008 18:58

I've ordered the Waspinator! With a name like that, how could I resist!

I'll let you know if it works...if it doesn't, I'll be straight onto the Lakeland site (at the risk of spending another £100 on 'essentials' I never knew I needed, lol).

Tks all for the tips.
