Stupid question - can I mow this grass or does it need strimmed first?

First house, first garden so pretty clueless. The grass was really overgrown when we moved in a few weeks ago.
Stupid question but can I just have at it with the lawnmower or should it really be strimmed first?

Mow it on a long setting then 3 or 4 days later use a middle setting and keep that going. It’s not that long.

I mowed ours in the spring and it was over a foot high, a good mower will cope.

It depends on your mower but any mower should be able to deal with that using @ACynicalDad s method. If it’s not too wet even better.
