Are these holes made by hedgehogs?

Hi,
We've suddenly got lots of small holes in our lawn and some animal poo.
So hedgehogs dig holes?
I'll attach some photos.
We used to have a hedgehog in our hedgehog house, but then next door got a yappy dog and we've not seen one for a few years now.
It would be lovely if it is (apart from the holes!!).

Hedgehog poo is distinctively pointy; that's not hedgehog.

When we had holes of a similar size it was badgers - but they use a dedicated latrine spot

Christwosheds · 14/09/2024 18:25

Holes could be badgers or foxes. Set up a camera maybe ?

Ohmycarrots · 14/09/2024 18:25

Looks fox like!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 14/09/2024 18:26

The droppings look like fox.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 14/09/2024 18:27

Fox v badger.

Squirrels can make holes like that burying acorns or nuts

TheCountessofLocksley · 14/09/2024 19:02

My lawn is full of holes like that from the squirrels! I know it's squirrels as they are totally brazen about it.....they taunt the dogs!

That's not squirrel poo though, looks like you might have a mother wildlife visitor. Cameras (if you can) would be good.

CrochetMadRosie · 14/09/2024 20:30

Thank you everyone.

Don't think it's squirrels making the holes as we haven't seen any for years (again since the yappy dog!).

Might have to invest in a camera!

We're going to keep an eye out tonight before we go to bed... I'll let you know if we see anything!

Thank you.
The poo is in about 4 or 5 places over the lawn (it's not that big a lawn!),
rather than one area.

Maybe it is two different things- one making holes and another pooing!

Are the holes about an inch or two in diameter? We’ve holes like that which we presume are caused by moles. Never had a mole hill but we’ve had a couple of dead moles on the lawn over the past few years. Can’t tell if they’ve died materially or a cat has had them as they were perfectly formed with no injuries.

All different sizes. No mole hills
and definitely look like they've been dug down rather than up.
Thank you though!
Just had a look and nothing in the garden yet, but it's still early!

Yes ours looked like they’d been dug down. It was only the dead moles that made us think they probably made them. I can’t think of what else it would be. We’ve plenty of worms in the lawn and it’s gone from being flat to being subtlety bumpy from the underground activity. If it’s not moles, I’d love to know what they are!

Ah, ok.
No dead moles yet... and hopefully none to come!

The alternative could be squirrels. Do you have any bird feeders around? I’ve seen squirrels raid the bird food and bury it it lawns at this time of year

Next door (not the yappy dog side!) have loads of bird feeders, but we've not seen squirrels for a long time.

We'll keep an eye out! Thanks.

I was thinking moles too.

We have a hedgehog 🦔 that visits us but I don't think her poo is as big as that.

I'm excited to find out what it is 😀

I was hoping that the hedgehogs had come back after yappy dog seemed to have scared them away...
We had a family of 3 a few years ago but not seen them for a long time.

So you can have moles without mole
hills? Every day is a school day!

Every kind poo is fox poo on Mumsnet. That's just something to be aware of.

According to @NoBinturongsHereMate library a badger seems likely.

Lilylovetulips · 14/09/2024 21:26

We have similar holes and its badgers, we put a camera up and caught them.

Not sure about the poo though.

Hocuspocus99 · 14/09/2024 22:06

The holes look like Badgers . We have a regular visitor that does the same . The poo however is not like that and I know what that looks like as he demolished the contents of my food bin .

ElizaMulvil · 14/09/2024 22:18

I had holes like this in the garden and the milkwoman (farmer) said, 'yes it's Mr Broc after the nests of solitary mining bees and their honey.'

CrochetMadRosie · 14/09/2024 22:25

Thank you everyone.
I keep peeking out, but haven't seen our visitors yet!

SpiderGwen · 15/09/2024 01:04

The holes like that we had turned out to be the crows - I'd been blaming the squirrels for weeks!
