Low maintenance plants for west/north-west facing front garden

Hi all, I would be really grateful for any suggestions of plants/foliage that might work well in our front garden which we're having re-done. Not thinking anything massive but a couple of window boxes and maybe a small bed of greenery. I don't know anything about gardening!

I had thought lavender as I love it but my mum says with this aspect it might not be a good idea. Also I've managed to kill any lavender I've ever owned. Argh.

Window boxes are pretty high maintaninence unless you install a watering system. Lowest maintaninence are shrubs. How much space have you got and what is your soil like? Is it clay or sandy? Do you know if is is acidic or alkaline?
