Digging weeds out of lawn

I have dandelions and spiky weeds growing in my lawn. An old neighbour had some sort of tool that went I to the lawn right next to the weed and pulled it out by the root without wrecking the grass. Does anyone know what I would search for or can recommend the one they use?

we’ve quite a large garden so a lot to work through and am happy to pay for something efficient and good!

Really pleased to hear that you’re not planning to use weedkiller.

The basic tool is a “hand weeder” which looks like a long bar with a forked end. The inside of the fork is sharpened to cut through roots a long way below ground level. Some people will use a hori hori knife - my son has just bought one “because it looks cool”

Thanks so much! My husband wants to weed kill. But as the garden is my baby really I’ve told him no! I’m quite happy pottering about pulling weeds on a sunny day - warm or cold! I’ll get googling. I just want rid of the big weeds so no need to go nuclear!

My front lawn is terrible for weeds I noticed yesterday.
Would love to pluck all of the weeds out but I'm scared there would be no lawn left! Will grass seed grow at this time of year?

@Breadcat24 a no bend option. Very interesting! Thanks.

Yes it will, just make sure the rest is well cut back so the sunlight gets to it. I did mine last year and by spring it was all lush and grown.

Just call it a meadow saves a lot of work and angst and is very friendly to insects and wildlife.

I have a weed grubber and a dandelion trowel. I like them both. My back does not.

I did the full lawn last year, it looked glorious. Garden's been sort of ignored this year and it's awful, so many weeds my neighbour thought I'd done wildflowers on one bank.

I had a mixed a large tub of grass seeds and soil and then dumped a handful with every week I pulled out. It grew in really well without much effort. Might have been lucky with the weather that year though.

The long handle machines usually pull out a plug of the plant and its root. Have a bucket of good soil to hand to fill in the resulting hole.

You can weed and improve the soil in one go.Smile

Thanks @Wwyd2025 when the rain stops I'm going to make that my next job.
There's a wild flower patch (used to be Council maintained grass verge but left for the bees now). It looks lovely but our lawn is constantly full of random weeds now. I have to cut the grass every week to take the tops off the dandelions and poppies! Grin
