Does anyone have any idea what the name of this tree is? I've tried google lens and also consulted all of our tree reference books (a surprising number) but can't find it.
I've never seen it anywhere except our garden and the garden next door. We live in the south of England. It spreads easily and doesn't get very big. The one in the pictures has been there since at least the mid 80s.
It has quite a strong smell, sort of musty and earthy. It flowers in the summer, white and pink with a sweet smell. In autumn it has lovely turquoise berries the size of blueberries but harder.
I'd love to know its real name so I can research it properly. We currently call them 'Heather trees' after the elderly lady who lived next door through the 80s and 90s.
