Which John Innes for adding to wisteria pot

I want to top up the compost in a fairly established wisteria in a pot because some seems to have washed away with time. I gather John Innes is the right one but which number should I get, 2 or 3? 🤔

The garden centre thought two but I thought three and I left with neither!

Hello Amoreeoamicizia,

For permanent planting in pots such as shrubs, trees or climbers you should use John Innes No. 3 which is a soil based growing media.

A soil based growing media is used for the following reasons:

It does not dry out as quick as multi purpose compost which is more often than not used for containers.

It adds additional weight to larger plants such as the above thus preventing them from blowing over.

Soil based growing media also holds on to plant nutrients better.

Soil based growing media also does not dry out as quickly as other growing media.

I hope the above answers your question.

Happy gardening

At least one of replies seems to have been written by AI! 😬

Thanks, but I don't need all this random info about wisteria in pots, I just need to know which John Innes to top up the pot with 🙂

I agree that #3 is the best bet, the higher amount of fertiliser is for long term use in pots.
