Cosmos

I pinched the tops of my cosmos, planted them out 4 weeks ago and they aren’t doing anything…look healthy but about 7 inches tall and no flower buds anything. I usually don’t pinch out as I like the featheriness…

is it just the weather? Nw and it’s been miserable.

Yes, the weather. This year has been unprecedentedly bad for growing

TonTonMacoute · 20/07/2024 16:12

Same here.

Two years ago they were five foot high, covered in flowers and buzzing with bees.

This year is just so depressing, I've hardly got any flowers in my cut flower patch.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/07/2024 17:45

I've got a few flowers now, and more buds coming along. But most of my plants have very wonky/bent stems - worse than usual I think.

TheShiningCarpet · 20/07/2024 18:00

I’m se and mine have only really started to flower now (they are in pots)

ErrolTheDragon · 20/07/2024 18:17

Actually I think it may still be quite early for cosmos...check out the dates on this thread!!

Last year my cosmos were an almost complete failure, and I think quite a lot of people reported similar.

Beebumble2 · 20/07/2024 18:53

Mine are quite dismal, although the white ones have flowers. I’m wondering if it’s the peat free compost as well as the weather.

LostMySocks · 20/07/2024 18:57

At least you have cosmos. Mine were all eaten by slugs.

There's loads of cosmos round here. I saw a house today with an entire front garden full of it. Def not too early

Mine are still quite small, grown from seed this year but I only planted them out about 3 weeks ago. The ones tjsg are fully grown and flowering on our allotment site tend to be ones that have self seeded from previous years. Once they get going they last till the first frosts so plenty of time yet.

charabang · 20/07/2024 23:07

Mine are woeful this year and I've two lots a month apart. Those that have survived the slugs are struggling without sun and warmth.

EasterlyDirections · 24/10/2024 14:39

Thought I'd revive this thread as mine have FINALLY flowered, just in the last week. Well one of them has anyway and it is absolutely covered in buds. Hoping it will keep going for a few weeks now. How did everyone else get on in the end?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2024 15:26

I've got quite a lot of flowers now. I was dubious earlier in the year but they're bringing me joy now in this between seasons time of year.

moretea · 27/10/2024 11:50

@EasterlyDirections mine are the same - I've finally got buds this last week after nothing until now. I'm hoping they will flower and that there is enough time before it gets too cold and wet. It's my first time growing them, so not sure how unusual this is

irridium · 28/10/2024 22:01

Mine have been abysmal this year - Xanthos only produced two stems and flowered very little. Apricotta similar. Both finished ages ago. The white single flowered one is still in flower but very sparse, though. They're in pots. The ones in the ground got munched on by snails/slugs and I didn't have any spares to replace them. I think next year, I'll grow them on in pots so that they're much stronger before they're planted out.

BigDahliaFan · 29/10/2024 11:53

Mine are just starting to think about flowering...bit bloody late.
