Lollaping lavatera!

My lavatera grew fabulously this year to around 6-7 feet. Covered in beautiful flowers with many buds to follow. Glorious. Then I woke up to find the whole thing horizontal across my grass. Help! I tried picking it up but the main trunk broke away from the base. It’s still alive (just!). I think it was the added excess weight of heavy rain. So….

  1. what should I do now - prune it all down to the base?
  2. How do I stop it happening next year?
thanks gardeners

Prune the broken bit down to where its broken. I would take cuttings from the bit that has broken off - they are very easy to do. You could try tying it up next year, but it may not look so nice. Cuttings is the way to go so you have some back up plants. they are not super long lived bushes.

Next year, do what I usually don't do in time with my larger plants - put in enough support early!
