If you've got a large area, spray with roundup or another glysophate weedkiller.

Or do as trefusis says and make nettle soup.

Nah...nuclear bomb won't work and the neighbours will only complain about the noise

The Organic Approaches would be...

Digging them out - but you have to get every bit of (brittle) root out of they will come back - not easy.

Cutting them down - just keep at it. Can you get a lawn mower across to the area easily enough? If so, just keep cutting them, it might take 2 -3 years if you are unlucky but eventually they will weaken and die

If I were you I would combine the two methods.

Also, if you take the tips off now and make some potent nettle fertiliser it will save lots of money on tomato feed later on it the year if you are that way inclined.

Nettles are good!

Pick the leaves adn sell them to asthma and hay fever sufferers (or freeze tehm and sell later)

dh says keep cutting them eventually they die... keep some though they're very good for wildlife.
