What is this?! Plant id

Background story:
DH bought from the supermarket a 'grow your own herbs' kit. The kit had three sachets with seeds: chives, basil and parsley. I planted them and here we are.

Two of the pots look like what they are meant to look like. Basil and parsley. The third pot is meant to have chives but the plant doesn't look like chives at all.

What the hell is this!?! They obviously put the wrong seeds in that sachet. I have used various plant ID apps, but the % of confidence they give is low and there are various results in between apps.
I have rubbed the leaves in an effort to see if it has a distinguish smell but it smells of nothing.

I'd guess it was some kind of basil, but if so the leaves would give off a strong scent when bruised. Fecknose, but it certainly isn't chives.

Can you send the photo to the company that made the seed selection and ask them?

It doesn't look like a basil to me - that typically has more rounded leaves in pairs and a thicker stem.

There's a lot of varieties of basil with very different leaves and growth habits - I have one in my porch at the moment that looks very much like that. But it smells of basil!

The leaves look like willowherb, but it cannot be a willowherb because they have opposite leaves, in pairs up the stem, and that has alternate leaves. Just getting that in first Grin

OP, I would keep growing it - it will become clear when it flowers. One thing - does it have a round stem or a square stem?

pussy willow?

No smell whatsoever so I am unsure if it's even a herb at all!

I have looked at the supermarket website for more info but the kit is not there anymore. I have found the set on Google but I can't find contact details of the manufacturer.

It's called the Trio Herb Set.

Round stem and looking closer it also has tiny white hairs.

I am convinced I am growing weeds at this point.

It looks like my little lemon tree I could also be growing a weed

pussy willow?

That was one of the plant ID app suggestions but when I looked at google images they didn't seem to look like the plant.

I got the Picture This app which identifies plants.
I love it.

As a matter of curiosity, how do you tell whether it's given you the right answer?

CountFucula · 06/07/2024 14:36

Is it not a chilli?

I would love a lemon tree but I don't think I will be this lucky.

I don't even like chives, but damn it I feel robbed of a herb!

You seem to have several of them, so it's more likely it's the wrong seeds in the packet than that you've got several random seeds which all happen to be the same. So I think it's worth growing on to see what it actually is.

Most of our herbs are either in the carrot family, with lacy leaves, or in the dead-nettle family Lamiaceae. And very many plants in Lamiaceae (although not all) have square stems, which is why I asked. (Chives is in the onion family)

CountFucula · 06/07/2024 14:36

Don't chillis have smooth edges to the leaves? These look serrated, And OP says the stems have little white hairs, which is wrong for Chilli

I googled chilli and the leaves don't seem to match which is a shame as DH actually loves chillies.

I don't @MereDintofPandiculation, but it does appear to get things right if I check further by googling the plant then myself.

Narmelleth · 06/07/2024 14:59

@MereDintofPandiculation Thank you, for your posts.

I will keep watering it and hope it will flower or do something soon. I am so curious at this point to find out what it is.

More pictures of the mystery plant.

I might call it the Trojan Horse as I have visions of growing it, taking care of it and one night it will kill us all. The invasion of the body snatchers movie also comes in mind.

It's fine to use apps as a starting point, but you should always do further checks, eg is the suggestion a tree, whereas my plant is a tine creeper? Does the suggestion actually grow in the UK? Does it fflower at the same time as my plant? Does it have the same number of petals? Does your plant match a description of the suggested plant - there are many features which are difficult to make out on a photograph. An app may be right 90% of the time but when they get it wrong they can be very wrong indeed. For example a willow tree seedling identified as mint.
