Do I have apple pests?

Hi, we have become proud owners of several espalier'ed (sp?) apple trees. I've been weeding the bed they are in & found several largish grubs - about 2cm long quite "chubby" and brown in colour. Now the question is do I leave them alone or are they pests that should be despatched with?

Never had a garden before so not sure if all grubs are bad or what!

My first inclination would be that they are leatherjackets - they are very common and match your description. here is a link with a picture of the little sweeties...enjoy
