What is this please? I said I would try and find out for them but none of my plant apps seem to suggest correctly.
TIA.

Oh I think the leaves are wrong for elder. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will be along!

SixFifteens · 03/07/2024 07:11

It isn’t that elder Disco as I have one. This smells nothing like elder and the leaves aren’t quite right but they are so similar. This is why we are stumped.

I agree it's not elder.

The flowers look familiar, but I can't quite place them.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 03/07/2024 20:37

I think it was viburnum that was ringing bells, but the leaves don't look quite right for that either.

Pixiedust1234 · 03/07/2024 20:44

Is it Sambucus racemosa? I'm getting that hit for both flower and leaf (yes I know apps aren't brilliant).

EDIT - I saw someone mention it not smelling like elder. Next door has one that smells of tomcat wee for the two weeks it flowers. It's vile Sad

It’s got compound leaves, hasn’t it (leaf divided into several leaflets). So not Viburnum. OP, are the leaves opposite or are they placed alternately up the stem? How many petals do the flowers have? Is it a shrub?

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/07/2024 10:11

“Black Beauty” seems to have narrower leaflets, like yours, but as it’s a variety of Sambucus nigra I’d expect it to have the smell.

It looks like a buddleia gone a bit wrong.Confused

SixFifteens · 04/07/2024 18:47

are the leaves opposite or are they placed alternately up the stem?

Shes gone away for a week, I will ask her to take a side pic when she comes back in a few days.

it looks like the flowers have 5 petals but then separate spokes with a bobbly bit on the end too. It’s so odd.

The leaves look too dark for Sambucus racemosa, it definitely never smells of elder though, we’ve discussed it annually for at least a couple of years.

Picture of the bark would be good too

Buddleia has simple leaves, though, not compound leaves made up of leaflets.

Sambucus Nigra 'Black Tower'?

SixFifteens · 06/07/2024 15:20

It really does look exactly like that -it just doesn’t smell of elder at all - and has never had the berries, maybe it’s been too young? Although it’s almost 6ft now. Very odd.

Managed to get more photos to confirm.

Does it have a scent?

equisetum · 06/07/2024 15:23

The flowers look a bit jasmine like

yes, but the leaves don't!

OP - do you have a pic of the more mature bark? On the biggest branc/trunk you can get access to? Has it got any dead wood on it by any chance? Elder has soft pith in the centre.

SixFifteens · 06/07/2024 15:39

alreadyinuse100 · 05/07/2024 20:43

Not really a scent at all but I accept it’s this one posted, the flowers are exactly the same as the ones on the link. Well done @alreadyinuse100 thank you, apologies to pp when I insisted it couldn’t be elder because there is no scent of one. it’s just nothing like my black elder, or the ones on the local footpath.

Thanks all.
