Bokashi question

Thinking of changing our composting regime .... due to rats. We have quite a small garden with a regular compost bin at the moment.

Like the look of bokashi, however we have a lot of fruit & veg peelings and fill up kitchen compost bin quickly. Would we get 2 weeks out of bokashi bin before filling up the second one? Also, one website says that vermin don't like the pickled contents of bokashi - is that true? I would empty bokashi into regular compost bin at the end of the garden without threat of rats returning

I have one but didn't do it properly so your post is reminding me to get it out again. I found that you must make sure the food scraps are small/cut up. I made the mistake of throwing out whole broccoli etc that i thought were too old to eat but they left too much air in the bin if that makes sense. (I then left it for a week hoping it would get better..) chop food into small bits, then 'mash' down and add powder. It might take a few weeks to work it out. I'd be amazed if you didn't get at least 2 weeks from it, they're big. the surprising thing is that when you're emptying the bin the food still looks the same because it's preserved by the pickling. they do suggest you put contents in an airtight container or bag for 2 weeks before you use it in your garden. I'd try that for a while to make sure the rats find a new home before adding it straight to the compost. I thought rats ate anything???

Thanks for that. I sometimes lob whole bits of veg into compost bin so I'll make sure I chop it up.

we are fairly new to the bokashi but do find we can usually make it last 2 weeks before it is full, and we do eat a fair bit of fruit and veg I would say

we are only beginners so can't really comment on the other things, but we are happy with it so far
