fellow allotmenters, I am here to pick your brains-

do any of you have a collective, site wide compost delivery? If so what are the pros and cons? how is it funded and organised?
TIA

I know it’s not what you asked however we have manure delivered on site. I believe the chairman knows a local farmer who delivers it a couple of times a year. We are charged £1 a barrow which we bank transfer to the account we pay our fees to. It relies on honesty however it’s obvious if you’ve used any. They make a profit on it too which goes towards the water bill and keeps site fees quite cheap. It’s been brilliant on our site.

thank you, all info useful
does it ever run out? I mean, do people stock up because there might not be any next week, or do they just wait till they need it because there's always some there?

Yes, people just wait until they need it as there is always some there. When it starts to run low they order some more however as its delivered in such a large quantity it’s never completely ran out.

We do different. Someone organises for farmer to come we divide the rough weight into barrow loads and take 5 or 10 barrows each. We bring cash and give to organiser on the day.

This is brilliant! I wish ours did that.

Instead I have the go and pick up (admittedly free!) horse manure from the local riding school and take it back in bags to the allotment gate and then barrow it to my plot.
