How do I stop the roots from sprouting?

I’ve recently chopped down some dog woods and laurel. I can’t remove the roots as it’s clay soil and I just don’t have the back for it!
But both are trying to sprout again, so what can I use/do (pet friendly) to stop them sprouting? Thanks.

Try tree stump killer - it is toxic to pets and wildlife so you apply it, cover the area with plastic (a weighted or tied down black bin bag worked for me) and within 6 to 8 weeks it should be dead. Or you can pay someone to dig it out for you!

Oh that’s interesting. I have a wild ash(?) that I didn’t get to soon enough and am just cutting back each year. Might try this though.

This sort of stuff?
