Think I got this at a school fair plant stall and can recall its name.

Looks like cowslip.

Maggiethecat · 20/06/2024 08:21

Thank you! It was a pleasant surprise to see it come up.

It’s a Primula but most definitely not a cowslip. The leaves are the wrong shape, the flowers are too pale, and there are traces of farina (white powder) on the flower stems which cowslip doesn’t have.

Primula florindae might be a possibility.

Thank you @MereDintofPandiculation

The foliage is very striking.

Defo this

I'd like to assure and inform everyone on this thread that @MereDintofPandiculation is about a million times more likely to be right than a plant app. Humans are still more intelligent than computers you know, and can evaluate details that computers recognise in a generalised, rote fashion, and not because they have actual understanding of what it is they are 'looking' at.

It's just a different species of cowslip though isn't it? A Tibetan or giant cowslip?

It is not a cowslip ! Too tall , wrong flower colour, and wouldn’t be in flower now. As Dint says, it’s a sort of perennial primula, I would hesitate to name it as it is almost certainly a seedling, they go wild with crossing.

Let it seed , OP; if it’s happy you’ll be donating to the flower stall in a couple of years time.

It's the plant apps that people treat as if they were god. They are so often wrong. @MereDintofPandiculation actually is quite circumspect in her claims. Whereas everyone who's looked at a plant app for five seconds is confidently proclaiming it to be cowslip.

Cowslip is Primula veris. To say it's a different species of cowslip is as accurate as saying it's a different species of primrose or auricula or polyanthus. Common names often have no bearing at all on relationships between plants. For example Goats Rue is in the pea family, Meadow rue is in the buttercup family, so neither are related to the herb Rue, and certainly not to Wall Rue which is a fern.

No, it's not, for the reasons I gave above. and if it's in flower at the moment, it's past the main flowering season for cowslip.
