Can anyone tell me what this plant is, please? I saw it at an open garden last weekend and really wants some in my garden!

Looks like an astrantia. They come in that whitish-green colour and also in shades of pink.

Great plants - I love mine because they're slug-proof! Although they do spread a bit too much.

Yes, Astrantia

But they’re not slugproof, at least not this year! One of mine has been shredded.

zaxxon · 19/06/2024 20:19

Really! That's funny, they're practically the only thing left in my garden after everything else got slugged. Tastes vary across the regions, I guess, like "cream first, then jam" or cheese & apple pie

Astrantia. There are red ones that are even nicer. They're umbellifers like cow parsley which you can sort of see by the pincushion arrangement in the centre. Good garden plants but they smell a bit foosty.

strawberryegg · 19/06/2024 22:35

Astrantia, that's a white/green variety. They're lovely and vase life can be weeks. Just don't smell great unfortunately.

I have 3 types in my garden as I love them.

There's a free app you can install on your phone called Leaf Snap which will let you take photo and identify plants when you're out and about

No it won’t. What it will do is ofter a suggestion for you to start your research.

I use the 'seek' app to identify plants.

It's been accurate for me so far.

Imicola · 20/06/2024 10:37

Definitely not slug proof in my garden either, but then our resident molluscs seem to have a taste for everything they are not supposed to like...hellebores, oriental poppies, pulmonaria. I've got 1 single flower from my astrantia this year... think I better replace it

Cantgetyou · 20/06/2024 14:51

Astrantia it is, thank you so much. 😊 Now I just need to find a garden centre with some in stock.

They’re all accurate a lot of the time. But they also make big mistakes. If you’re using it because you don’t know what the plant in front of you is, how will you know if the answer is wrong?

Was that ‘seek’ you used to misidentify as “cowslip” on another thread?
