I am working on the messy back garden garden after buying my first house and found this (see pic) today.

Not sure what these bush/berries are? are they edible?

I am a complete newbie gardener...

Looks like a blackcurrant

Linearforeignbody · 09/06/2024 17:53

They look like blackcurrants to me. They’ve a while to go before they ripen by the looks of them.

SoulMole · 09/06/2024 17:54

Blackcurrant

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 09/06/2024 17:55

Blackcurrants.

ginasevern · 09/06/2024 17:56

Blackcurrants. Usually ready by August when they get a purple'ish shine to them. Some varieties may be ready a little earlier.

DelphiniumBlue · 09/06/2024 17:57

Blackcurrants- lucky you!

heathspeedwell · 09/06/2024 17:57

Perfect for making jam!

AllrightNowBaby · 09/06/2024 18:05

Blackcurrants 😊

astridforty · 09/06/2024 18:07

Another one chipping in to say blackcurrants. Fab find

Lomita277 · 09/06/2024 18:11

Absolutely blackcurrants!

Startingagainandagain · 09/06/2024 18:39

Thank you so much everyone.

They look like blackcurrants. But before eating any berries you should also check leaf shape and other characters

TheSpottedZebra · 10/06/2024 17:11

What Mere said.

But you can also tell blackcurrants by rubbing, and smelling the leaves. Does it smell blackcurranty?

Nb some people think the smell is like cats' piss, but they are heathens.

chattyness · 10/06/2024 17:17

definitely blackcurrants, we've got lots in our garden

Wafflefudge · 10/06/2024 18:16

They are much further along than mine but look like blackcurrants. My redcurrants haven't started yet.

kwetu · 10/06/2024 18:18

Looking at the leaves too I'd also say blackcurrant

kwetu · 10/06/2024 18:20

If blackcurrant you should be able to tell by the smell, mine you can always smell the blackcurrant just walking nearby

isthewashingdryyet · 10/06/2024 18:20

Agree, blackcurrants. The leaves smell very strongly, so that is also a clue.

the birds get them if I don’t pick as soon as ripe. They freeze really well.

Startingagainandagain · 10/06/2024 18:48

Thank you for the additional advice everyone!

I will do the leaves 'smell test' tomorrow.

I am in Kent (seaside town) and everything in this garden seems to grow early/fast :)...

Picture this doesnt “confirm “ anything. Apps still make enough mistakes for it to be foolhardy to rely on an app id for anything you want to eat

chattyness · 10/06/2024 22:34

@Startingagainandagain These are some of mine just now, they're nowhere near ripe yet, we're behind because we've had awful weather this year, the ripened one's are from last year
