Slugs - an experiment

Everyone is struggling with slugs this year. Last year they murdered all my brassicas. I put some brussel sprouts in last week, they are doing well, but the telltale slime trails and nibbled leaves are appearing.
we have a pampas grass (big mistake, it was supposed to be a mini at only 6 feet, and pink - it's big and beige 😬).I hadn't got round to giving it a haircut, and suddenly thought - the leaves have sharp edges, wonder if the slugs would cross it. So I got the spring tine rake out and raked out all the dead leaves, OH chopped them up with the shears and I've spread them all around the plants, making sure there are no paths for them to get through.
saves burning the leaves, they don't really compost well.
Will let you know if it works.

Ooh good idea. I try and pick them off a few times a week but after three weeks away, I came home to enormous slugs everywhere. They’ve even had a go at plants like rudbeckia which they usually ignore 😩

Next morning, and the sprouts plants are still intact!

Quick - patent it!!

OMG I am going to have to check out the local Swinger's directory for likely Pampas grass locations. This is genius.

I tried eggshells today. Problem was, they were some I collected last year and kept in a jar. Hadn't realised you needed to bake them. I think I'm going to have to amputate my hand. The smell... I have scrubbed with a nail brush and soap several times and it ÅŸtill smells so evil I cannot cope.

It's either going to repel, or attract all the slugs from miles around. 🤢

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 02/06/2024 22:25

Sorry, Swingers', not Swinger's. I'm in a city, not a hamlet with one hopeful sweaty-palmed individual...

Sheep’s wool is supposed to be an excellent slug deterrent

DH currently has multiple beer traps out and occasionally goes on a night raid wearing a head torch when the mood strikes. (Usually wine fuelled righteous rage)

Tonight he has tried wheatgerm. In theory they eat it and explode when it expands but so far they just seem to love it, no explosions.

He has basically given them a lovely beer and food buffet!

I have an amazing Timelapse video of a disturbing number gorging themselves but can't figure out how to screenshot it.

FizzingAda · 03/06/2024 08:58

I have used baked eggshells before, but didn't have any at the moment, no sheep’s wool or coffee grounds, or beer, won't use slug pellets, so I just used what was here. Still OK this morning!!!!

The wheatgerm seems to have worked in that there is a slimy mess on the patio. Plants mostly untouched.

Oh, does it work instantly?!

CornedBeef451 · 03/06/2024 09:28

Update from DH, it doesn't work!

The impressive pile of goo was due to a salt attack. He said they ate the bran and left!

MagnusMagnussonNotHisRealName · 03/06/2024 09:32

I did wonder, as the salt was quite visible in the picture 😂

CornedBeef451 · 03/06/2024 17:13

@MagnusMagnussonNotHisRealName I didn't even notice the salt, I was so so excited about the bran!
