This has sprung up in my mums garden and we can't find out what it is, fairly sure we didn't plant it ourselves.

It could be baby wood avens but I wouldn't definitely say that till it gets a bit bigger.

Yes, and it’s a bastard. Pull it up before it seeds into and strangles the plants you like.

Agree. Get rid.

looks like a hollyhock to me

Another vote for wood avens. Get rid.

Thanks all , yes definitely looks like Wood Avens , my mum is very elderly and frail, she was an avid gardener but I do it for her now- looks like I've got a bit of weeding to do!

Yep, wood avens, also known as herb Bennet. Try to dig out all the roots. It's a nuisance and spreads quickly.

Hello again CremeFresh,

I agree with FictionalCharacter it does spread quickly by seed so dig it up after it has flowered or before.

Happy gardening

It’s definitely a Geum, and if you didn't plant a Geum, then Geum urbanum, Wood Avens. Spreads and self seeds. So if you don’t want it you’ll need to get it under tight control
