Removing artificial grass?

Has anyone removed artificial grass before? Trying to get an idea of what state the ground is likely to be in underneath, and how much effort/time will be required. It was laid professionally on soil (and they did a cracking job), so will have sand/substrate etc. layers underneath. I plan to remove a section and use that area for growing fruit bushes. Trying to suss out the scale of the project, if it's a one man job, will I need to get some manpower in to break up compaction or can I just shove a layer of top soil and compost on top, will things grow okay in the first year or would I be better sowing some green manure etc. Any experiences appreciated :-)
