Cheap lawnmower that cuts close

I have an ancient electric lawnmower that flattens the grass more than actually cutting it. The grass is always left quite long and within 5 days needs cutting again. Is there a cheapish option that gives a really close cut?

Does your mower have adjustable height blades? It's better not to cut more than one third of the height of the grass at once.

It's hard to recommend a mower without knowing more. How large is the area?

Can you remove the blade to sharpen it?

Once a week grass cutting in the main growing season sounds about right though. It's not particularly healthy for the grass to to be continually cut very short. It might mean more maintenance in the long term, with moss, bald patches etc. it makes it less tolerant to stresses like drought

I've bought all my/family lawnmowers through Argos and been happy with the majority. Have you checked there?

EDIT - most have adjustable blades or wheels for multiple cutting heights

Agree sharpening the blades is a good first step, won’t cost nearly as much as a new lawnmower even if you take it to a repair shop.

Ah ok, I thought weekly grass cutting was excessive. Its a large garden, very bumpy and uneven. The front garden is a steep slope.

I do adjust blade height, but even on the lowest setting the grass just doesn't look short. I guess it doesn't help that it's always slightly wet.
