They are short lived, but it is important to stop them forming seed, this can happen in just an afternoon. I remove all their leaves as well. I do not worry about trying to dig them out.

The flowers are good for bees and other beneficial insects like hoverflies - hoverfly larvae eat aphids. Never weedkill dandelions with flowers as it can poison bees. I like them for the yellow flowers in spring and leave them in the lawn and some rougher areas of the garden. I dig them out of flower and vegetable beds and weedkill ones on gravel paths when they don't have flowers on. If you can be bothered to remove the flowers before they seed that will stop them spreading.

Personally love them and leave them be, but they are an indicator of compacted soil so perhaps worth tackling that with aeration and adding organic matter. Treating the cause rather than the symptom perhaps.

Don't you use them to tell the time??
