Does anyone know what these weeds are?

We had new soil delivered from Covers last year for our flower beds and these are now coming up everywhere and they are a blimmin nuisance to get out as roots are deep.

Thank you.

Looks like some sort of grass - couch grass maybe?

Crazeland · 28/04/2024 12:30

Yep grass. Pull or hoe it out

It's couch grass.
Unfortunately most soil you buy will have grass seeds mixed in. Weeding it out is part of the process.

Thank you both.

Not enough detail in the photo to be sure, but I don’t think that’s couch grass Elymus repens, looks more like a meadow grass Poa sp.

mind, to most gardeners, any grass that isnt in a lawn is “couch” Grin

If it's in a flower bed it doesn't really matter what sort of grass it is. IME it's best to dig it out with a weeding tool or small trowel - hoeing probably won't go deep enough and pulling is liable to just take the leaves off and leave the root.

Well, it does to a certain extent - not all grasses have underground shoots.
