The leaf vein pattern looks like a dogwood.

Yes, as does the flower cluster in the top left corner of the closeup.

There is one trick that would say it was dogwood (although I don't know if all dogwoods do it) - if you pull a leaf apart, very gently, till the two edges are perhaps hald a centimetre apart, the stickiness of the sap is enough for you to be able to hold the leaf up by one half, and the other half dangles from it apparently by magic. like this

My first thought was cornus and was confused that the excellent plant identifier @MereDintofPandiculation said dogwood. Then I remembered that cornus is the Latin name for dogwood. My gardening brain is programmed in Latin and I have trouble switching it off sometimes.😂

That's praise indeed from @Yamadori who I would always defer to for tree ids

Yamadori · 23/04/2024 18:22

And it is you @MereDintofPandiculation to whom I defer when it comes to all matters herbaceous. Not to mention @NanTheWiser for all succulent and prickly articles.

Veritable walking plant apps, you both are. Anyway, enough of all this nonsense! 😂

NanTheWiser · 23/04/2024 22:58

Well, thank you, @Yamadori! You’ve made me blush!😊
